I do not always agree with this guy, but his stuff is usually interesting. I though this was an interesting and different view of the DACA and and immigration debate. Not posted to provoke anyone, just to share something that has made me think about this issue in a bit different way.

Why do we care how people get here? Really, why does it matter at all?

The bad ones will be dealt with by local law enforcement, just like citizens would be. The rest still pay taxes through their purchase of goods and services and property.

So just by happy accident of the geography of one’s birth, some of us are somehow ‘better’ than any of those who risked everything to get here and try to have a better life? Other than the majority of these people being brown, I struggle to see how any of this is a problem for so many others.

The article was a decently thought-provoking read up until two places:

The United States is hardly a xenophobic country. Much less is it anti-Latino

A major, if not the most major, component of our current President’s campaign platform was a multi-billion dollar wall exclusively to keep out Latinos. Since the writer presumably lives in L.A., a city with the second-largest Hispanic population, I doubt he sees too much anti-Mexican sentiment but I see and hear it all the time in the Midwest and call tell you that was a huge reason people around here voted for Trump.

This is uninformed at best and disingenuous at worst. Legally you can’t apply for citizenship until five years after receiving your green card, which itself can take up to nine years and is a byzantine and complex process so it’s no small wonder there’s a lot of Dreamers are either a) not willing to go through that or b) can’t even apply yet.

I’m also not sure why he seems to be criticizing Democrats for using immigration to get votes when Republicans use it for the same thing; difference is the Democrats’ policies will actually help their voters versus the GOP who just stir up angry racists in small rural towns that have zero immigrant populations to begin with. Besides, non-citizens can’t vote, and have time and again shown no predilection towards illegal voting so if the Democrats are trying to shadily eke out a few extra votes there’s probably better ways of doing it.

Yeah I think I’ve been had. I’m usually quick to figure it out but I wasn’t really *that* shocked. That’s how crazy it is. They say something like that and I’m not surprised. This government sucks

This is the same guy that I post. Californian, Central Valley dweller, wide perspective. But he’s also prone to idiotic conservative dogmatic nonsense at times and professorial bloviatious musings. I find his posts useful about half the time, but the good half is very good.

When it comes to illegal immigrants, my feeling is it takes 2 to tango. The primary reason many if not most is for better economic prospects.

So my thoughts are if you’re going to blame those that cross illegally, one also has to blame the business that knowingly hire them. remove the economic incentive to hire an pay under the table. But its politcally easier to go after individuals than business interests.
